Vintage Fernando Bermejo (1949–2023) — Unique Hand-Painted Studio Table Lamp, Ex-Artist’s Atelier, Spain

Constructed in black metal, the lamp is treated as a complete sculptural surface rather than a conventional lighting object. Its broad, sharply pitched shade, cylindrical stem and circular foot form a strong geometric silhouette, over which Bermejo applied an extraordinary red and black composition by hand. The decoration has the quality of an enlarged herbarium or botanical imprint: leaves, branches and fragmented organic forms appear across the severe metal structure in dense red pigment. The tension is precisely what makes the piece so compelling — hard geometry and spanish brutalism against something vegetal, almost primitive and gestural. Bermejo’s authorship is particularly important here. Known primarily as a sculptor, he brings the same concern with volume, surface and objecthood to a functional form. The lamp feels less designed than made, occupying an unusual territory between sculpture, furniture and artist’s object. Spain, 1970s. Hand-painted metal. Original wiring.
