Floating Tusk Bibliothèque by Valenti Barcelona, Spain, 1970s

Produced by Valenti — Barcelona’s great house of aristocratic modernism — at a moment when furniture was still allowed symbolic ambition. Twin ivory-toned tusks rise from a lacquered plinth like an architectural relic: part safari fantasy, part ceremonial arch. The use of composite rather than ivory makes the gesture strangely more self-aware — less trophy than myth. Smoked glass shelves hang on braided gold cables with an almost impossible visual lightness, suspended rather than supported. Everything here resists gravity. Not really a library at all, but a stage set for intellectual vanity: books elevated into icons, objects into offerings. A rare example of furniture behaving like theatre.
